The recent visit to Australia by David Beckham and his team the LA Galaxy was a windfall for the NSW tourism board.
Behind the scenes it was all hands on deck to avoid a disaster and embarrassment for Australia.
The drama began when the chosen site for the game (Energy Stadium in Newcastle) was hired out for a motocross event that led to the pitch surface being severely damaged.
This is an excert from an article on the Stadium Australia website:
"The appalling condition of the pitch at Newcastle’s EnergyAustralia Stadium has forced the postponement of Wednesday night’s A-League clash between the Jets and Fury and has cast a shadow over David Beckham’s $2 million visit to the Hunter Valley next month. The Newcastle Knights are being blamed after a supercross event left Energy Australia Stadium needing $500,000 in emergency funding from the NSW Government to fix the playing surface. The ground has been deemed unsafe to play on by Football Federation Australia."

Evergreen Turf received an urgent “Please Help” call on a Friday night and by Monday w were on site at Newcastle to prepare the ground surface.
Tuesday was the Melbourne Cup holiday. On Wednesday the first 3 of 10 semi loads left our Pakenham facility and got to the Newcastle stadium around 1.00am where our crew began to re-instate the surface to a level of a top class sports venue.
The Evergreen turf team stayed on site until late Saturday afternoon when the job was completed and signed off by the client.
Another great result by the Evergreen turf team.
