Growing Tips

Top Dressing Instant Lawns

There are two main reasons to topdress a lawn.

The first being to improve levels of an existing or newly installed lawn. The best advice is not to apply the soil or sand too thickly. On no account should the grass blades be buried. Mowing of the lawn before top dressing is desirable.

A similiar sand or soil type to your existing ground should be used for topdressing as water, air and fertiliser may have difficulty moving through the different soil  layers.

The second reason would be to aid in reducing thatch. Thatch is an accumulation of dead leaves, stems and roots that do not quickly break down in the soil. You may have noticed that over time that the turf lifts over the height of your pavers or concrete. This is thatch accumulation. Generally, as a rule, a removal process like coring and/or scarifying would take place (can be hired from hire type companies) initially when the turf is actively growing and then an application of light topdressing would occur. Sand or soil should again be very similiar to your existing topsoil.

We have always allowed about 1 cubic metre of sand/soil per 100 square metres for topdressing lawns.
