Sprigging or Stolonising
| What is Sprigging or Stolonising? Warm season grasses are predominately grown by cuttings. These cuttings are from the runners of the grass either called Sprigs or Stolons. When these parts of the plant are shredded up and pushed into the surface, they can set root and grow. They eventually cover the entire area forming a magnificent lawn. What grass types can you sprig? Kikuyu, Conquest and Santa Ana Couch are all ideal grasses to plant in Melbourne. These types of grasses are quick to establish and are extremely drought tolerant. When can I sprig? The perfect planting time in Melbourne is from late September through to early February. The warmer the conditions the quicker the coverage. What preparation is required? Soil preparation is the same as planting any lawn, remove the existing grass, rotary hoe and level. The sprigs are spread over the surface and mixed lightly into the soil with a rotary hoe or pushed in by a roller. Ground Preparation for Instant Lawns How do I order Sprigs/Stolons? For small orders these are supplied in hessian bags which cover approximately 100 square metres. For larger areas, we sell them in cubic metre bins that plant 1000 square metres. |
